Raise funds for 4 new speech-language communication devices.
There are three types of devices we are considering: Tobii with Communicator Software | Nova chat 10 | Nova CHAT 7
These communication devices can put a smile on a child’s face by:
- Helping children and adults to express themselves, have social interactions, participate in their community and provide opportunities to develop language when they are non-verbal
- Giving children new levels of control and independence
- Gives the youth an opportunity to connect to the internet and communicate on social media
- Allowing the caregiver to make adjustments to the program remotely without having to take it away from the child/youth
Each device ranges from $7,200 to $8,000. | The speech-language unit alone sees 30,000 clients in a year.
The Communication DeviceTypes of Devices
The communication device is designed for individuals with communication disabilities at various levels. It can convert text and symbols into clear speech. It is needed for children in the speech, language and hearing department. The department is made up of many disciplines including occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech-language pathology, clinical nutrition and home based development. The speech-language unit alone sees 30,000 clients in a year. Communication assisting resources can make a significant impact in the life of one who deals with speech disabilities. Users of these devices gain a sense of confidence and independence by being able to express themselves, engage in social interactions and develop language when they are non-verbal. By providing increased access to these devices by funds raised through Smile Cookie, there will be an opportunity for greater impact by giving children access to communication created specifically for them.

$15,500 per unit. These amazing stairs are for the Children’s Allied Health department. They are designed for people in various stages of rehabilitation and allow the client to progress gradually. The apparatus adjusts from parallel bars to four steps whose height can be adjusted electronically from zero to 6.5 inches between steps. The handrails on either side are also adjustable to fit the size of the client. Previously, the department did not have parallel bars; they were using nonadjustable wooden stairs that were not suitable for everyone. Having these stairs has allowed many more clients to experience the success of independent walking.
$33,000 per unit. The radiant infant warmer is used in the Labour and Delivery unit and cesarean surgical suite; it is the first point of care once a baby arrives. It provides a warm, safe environment with resuscitation abilities and built in oxygen regulators. This provides an in-bed scale, plenty of storage and many convenient features to allow the healthcare professionals to react to any situation.
$30,000 per unit. Fetal monitors are used in the Labor and Delivery department. These monitors are used to monitor the fetal heart rate of baby, uterine contraction pressure and fetal movement throughout pregnancy. They are used to perform the common stress tests to make sure mom and baby are both doing well and used during the labor and delivery process.
Purchased at $15,000. The play wall in the Emergency department waiting room is used as a distraction tool to occupy the children who may be waiting.
